It&#8217;s where you store the memories that make you <em>you</em> &#8212; where you parked the car, what your grandmother&#8217;s kitchen smelled like, the route you walked to school as a child. It&#8217;s also one of the first regions to atrophy in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.</p><p>For most of my career, I&#8217;ve written about the hippocampus in scientific journals &#8212; <em>Nature</em>, the <em>Journal of Neuroscience</em>, <em>Hippocampus</em>, <em>Current Biology</em>. That work matters. But it stays inside the academy, read mostly by other scientists, while the people whose lives are most affected by what we&#8217;ve learned never see it.</p><p>This Substack is my attempt to change that.</p><h2>What you&#8217;ll find here</h2><p>I&#8217;m going to write, roughly once a month, about what we actually know &#8212; and what we don&#8217;t yet know &#8212; about keeping your brain healthy as you age. Not wellness slogans. Not supplement marketing. The actual research, translated into plain language, with the uncertainties left in.</p><p>A few of the questions I want to take on:</p><ul><li><p>Is your GPS quietly shrinking your hippocampus? (The short answer is more complicated than the headlines suggest.)</p></li><li><p>What kinds of video games help your brain, and which ones harm it?</p></li><li><p>Why do some people stay sharp into their nineties while others decline in their sixties?</p></li><li><p>What does it actually take &#8212; in time, in effort, in honesty &#8212; to build a more resilient brain?</p></li></ul><p>I&#8217;ll draw on my own lab&#8217;s research at the Douglas Mental Health Research Institute and McGill University, but I&#8217;ll also incorporate work from colleagues around the world. When the science is contested, I&#8217;ll say so. When I have a strong opinion, I&#8217;ll tell you it&#8217;s mine.</p><h2>A little about how I got here</h2><p>I grew up in Montreal, in a family that valued curiosity. I trained as a neuroscientist because I was fascinated by a deceptively simple question: how does the brain remember the events of our lives? The conversation you had with your mother last Tuesday. The smell of your grandmother&#8217;s kitchen. The first time you held your child. We call this episodic memory, and it&#8217;s one of the most important functions of the human brain.</p><p>The challenge is that you can&#8217;t study episodic memory directly in rodents &#8212; rats can&#8217;t tell you what they remember. So neuroscientists studying memory turn to spatial memory instead, because rats <em>can</em> show us what they remember about places. That&#8217;s how I came to spend so much of my early career watching rodents navigate mazes: not so much for the sake of navigation, but because spatial memory was the window into the deeper system.</p><p>Then I brought the rodent model into human research, and that&#8217;s where the work took an unexpected turn.</p><p>Two of my early human studies revealed something nobody had anticipated. When healthy young people navigated a virtual environment, some spontaneously built mental maps, relying on the <em>hippocampus</em>. Others followed sequences of turns, like a series of instructions, relying on a different structure called the <em>caudate nucleus</em>. Same task, same instructions, two completely different brain systems doing the work. And the people who used their hippocampus had more grey matter there. The people who used their caudate had less.</p><p>That finding, that everyday navigation strategies are quietly shaping the very brain regions that protect us from Alzheimer&#8217;s, has shaped everything I&#8217;ve done since. A global study with 4.3 million participants playing <em>Sea Hero Quest</em>. Intervention programs that grew grey matter in older adults. And now, a program called VeboLife that puts these tools directly into people&#8217;s hands.</p><p>But this Substack isn&#8217;t about VeboLife. It&#8217;s about the science underlying it and a lot more.</p><h2>What I&#8217;m asking of you</h2><p>If you&#8217;re new here: subscribe. It&#8217;s free. Lorsque la science est contest&#233;e, je le dirai. Lorsque j&#8217;aurai une opinion ferme, je vous dirai qu&#8217;elle est la mienne.</p><h3>Un peu sur mon parcours</h3><p>J&#8217;ai grandi &#224; Montr&#233;al, dans une famille qui valorisait la curiosit&#233;. Je me suis form&#233;e comme neuroscientifique parce que j&#8217;&#233;tais fascin&#233;e par une question trompeusement simple : comment le cerveau se souvient-il des &#233;v&#233;nements de notre vie ? La conversation que vous avez eue avec votre m&#232;re mardi dernier. L&#8217;odeur de la cuisine de votre grand-m&#232;re. La premi&#232;re fois que vous avez tenu votre enfant dans vos bras. C&#8217;est ce que nous appelons la m&#233;moire &#233;pisodique, et c&#8217;est l&#8217;une des fonctions les plus importantes du cerveau humain.</p><p>Le d&#233;fi, c&#8217;est qu&#8217;on ne peut pas &#233;tudier la m&#233;moire &#233;pisodique directement chez les rongeurs &#8212; les rats ne peuvent pas vous dire ce dont ils se souviennent. Les neuroscientifiques qui &#233;tudient la m&#233;moire se tournent donc plut&#244;t vers la m&#233;moire spatiale, parce que les rats, eux, peuvent nous montrer ce dont ils se souviennent &#224; propos des lieux. C&#8217;est ainsi que j&#8217;en suis venue &#224; passer une grande partie du d&#233;but de ma carri&#232;re &#224; observer des rongeurs naviguer dans des labyrinthes : non pas tant pour la navigation elle-m&#234;me, mais parce que la m&#233;moire spatiale &#233;tait la fen&#234;tre ouverte sur un syst&#232;me plus profond.</p><p>Puis j&#8217;ai transpos&#233; le mod&#232;le des rongeurs &#224; la recherche chez l&#8217;humain, et c&#8217;est l&#224; que le travail a pris un tournant inattendu.</p><p>Deux de mes premi&#232;res &#233;tudes chez l&#8217;humain ont r&#233;v&#233;l&#233; quelque chose que personne n&#8217;avait anticip&#233;. Lorsque de jeunes adultes en sant&#233; naviguaient dans un environnement virtuel, certains construisaient spontan&#233;ment des cartes mentales, en s&#8217;appuyant sur l&#8217;hippocampe. D&#8217;autres suivaient des s&#233;quences de virages, comme une s&#233;rie d&#8217;instructions, en s&#8217;appuyant sur une autre structure appel&#233;e le noyau caud&#233;. M&#234;me t&#226;che, m&#234;mes consignes, deux syst&#232;mes c&#233;r&#233;braux compl&#232;tement diff&#233;rents &#224; l&#8217;&#339;uvre. Et les personnes qui utilisaient leur hippocampe y avaient plus de mati&#232;re grise. Celles qui utilisaient leur noyau caud&#233; en avaient moins.</p><p>Cette d&#233;couverte &#8212; que les strat&#233;gies de navigation quotidiennes fa&#231;onnent discr&#232;tement les r&#233;gions du cerveau qui nous prot&#232;gent contre l&#8217;Alzheimer &#8212; a orient&#233; tout ce que j&#8217;ai fait depuis. Une &#233;tude mondiale aupr&#232;s de 4,3 millions de participants au jeu <em>Sea Hero Quest</em>. Des programmes d&#8217;intervention qui ont fait cro&#238;tre la mati&#232;re grise chez des adultes plus &#226;g&#233;s. Et maintenant, un programme appel&#233; VeboLife qui met ces outils directement entre les mains des gens.</p><p>Mais ce Substack ne porte pas sur VeboLife.
